The 4th generation Amazon Echo Dot currently retails for $49.99 and is smarter, faster and even more modern looking than its predecessors. But for those of us who already own an Echo Dot or other Amazon Alexa devices, how does it compare and is it worth an upgrade?
First Impressions
The first thought that popped into my head when I laid eyes on the Amazon Echo Dot 4th gen was “wow this is adorable!” This new redesign of the Echo Dot is what I’ve been waiting for. The design is modern and understated, and the device won’t stand out like a sore thumb alongside the rest of my décor. Looks aside, this little device has the same capabilities as any other smart device. Alexa enabled, you can stream music from your favorite app. Overall it performs exactly as I would expect an Amazon Alexa product to perform.
Hardware
In the box you’ll find the Amazon Echo Dot 4th gen in one of three colors (Twilight Blue, Glacier White or Charcoal). You’ll also find the power adapter (15W), and the quick start guide in the box.
On the top of the device you have four buttons. Your power or “action” button, volume buttons, and my favorite, the mic mute button. I usually use that button while I’m having work conference calls or discussing some sensitive information I don’t want Alexa to be potentially privy to. Call me paranoid, but there’s potential risk with smart devices always listening. The Amazon Echo Dot 4th gen measures 3.9” x 3.9” x 3.5” and weighs in at about 12 oz. The echo sports a 1.6” front-firing speaker.
Setup
Setting it up is very simple. It integrates seamlessly with your Amazon account and Amazon music. You download the app, connect your Amazon account, and set up your Echo Dot based on your preferences. It’s all a very simple process that only takes a few minutes. What’s nice about the Alexa app is that it also lets you control and keep track of everything you’ve told your Echo Dot all through your phone. For example - if you make a shopping list with Alexa, you can then reference that list through the app once you’re shopping in store.
The New Design
The design is probably the most exciting feature of the Amazon Echo Dot 4th gen. When I previously thought of an Alexa product, the puck shaped speaker came to mind. Amazon has decided to reinvent the look by ‘inflating’ the puck and turning it into a ball. This might be Amazon’s way to compete with the Apple HomePod or Google Nest speakers using a more mainstream look.
This 4th gen Echo Dot looks noticeably higher end than Amazon’s previous smart speakers. The styling is slightly elevated with a full soft cloth exterior. Amazon has stayed true to their Dot designs by keeping the LED lights at the bottom indicating Alexa is listening. My one complaint regarding the design would be the color of the charging cord. I have the charcoal amazon echo dot and I hate the fact that the charging cord is white. I would expect the charging cord to match the color of the device. Since the cord is white, it completely clashes with the speaker and stands out in the worst way.
Small But Mighty
This little thing is perfect for my 700 square foot one-bedroom apartment. For the most part, Alexa can hear me from anywhere in the main living space. Alexa does tend to be a bit temperamental at times, refusing to hear my inquiry about the weather outside, although my voice may simply not carry very well. Regardless, in a small space, its perfect and performs as expected.
I wouldn’t host a rager at your house with this Echo Dot, but I think it definitely checks all the boxes for “casual listening” or background music.
Sound Quality
On a lower volume (less than 50%) I really can’t complain. When you play music and call for Alexa, the music is automatically lowered so she can hear you. Once the volume ramps up and the party gets going, the echo dot exhibits its pitfall. Once you go above that 50% mark, it sounds terrible. The bass becomes distorted and music quality suffers. I wouldn’t host a rager at your house with this Echo Dot, but I think it definitely checks all the boxes for “casual listening” or background music.
Capabilities
Smart home devices aren’t new and I’m sure you’re all aware of their capabilities. Listed below are the features I found most useful when using the device:
1. Making lists
2. Having Alexa read through recipes for you
3. Automatically play Amazon music and switch between phone and Alexa seamlessly
4. Mute button – this is really important to me on smart devices
Final Thoughts
Although Amazon has updated the design of the Echo Dot in this 4th iteration, the functionality doesn’t seem all that different from previous generations. While I’m a fan of the “sophisticated” ball shape design with the mesh exterior, this version doesn’t seem to offer anything special when it comes to a smart home device. I wouldn’t consider upgrading devices unless you absolutely love the new design and feel it would be the perfect piece to complete your space. If you are just getting into the smart home game and are looking for an inexpensive device that also ties into your aesthetic, this 4th gen Amazon Echo Dot will do the trick. You’re getting app integration, the most up to date Alexa capabilities and decent sound. I would just wait for the device to go on sale before making the investment.
