10 Ways I Use ChatGPT At Home and Work
A few weeks ago as I was scrolling through my LinkedIn, I noticed an increase in the amount of people talking about AI and ChatGPT. There were people talking about how AI would replace software jobs, marketing jobs, and even news about how ChatGPT caused Google to potentially be concerned about the platform competing with their search engine.
Needless to say, ChatGPT has suddenly become all the rage and is taking the Internet world by storm. So naturally that got me asking just what the heck is ChatGPT? Let’s ask. According to ChatGPT itself, it’s an artificial intelligence from OpenAI that can learn from massive amounts of human-generated text and data. The response is essentially a very smart chatbot that can converse with you in pretty close to realistic human lingo. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen artificial intelligence come to life in front of us and our society has already been using this type of technology in different industries, but what makes ChatGPT different thus far is that it’s easily accessible, fast to respond, and scarily quick to generate. This is all done through its training model and through ingestion of text-based data that it continually trains itself in over large amounts of time. The result is an AI that continues to be improved subconsciously even if it’s not necessarily perfect… yet.
Ever since I discovered ChatGPT, I started incorporating it into my daily life to see how it can help me both personally and professionally. This article covers some of the ways I’ve been using ChatGPT and how it’s been helpful to me.
how i’ve been using chatgpt in my personal life
I’m a big fan of using Notion for task planning and journaling. One thing I’ve enjoyed asking ChatGPT everyday is for a different motivational quote. You can even ask it for quotes from specific people or places. Rather than searching on Google for a specific website or navigating different webpages for an answer, ChatGPT can regenerate a new quote for you every single day. It gets you straight to what you’re asking without getting lost or redirecting you to another source.
I also recently challenged myself to creatively write at least a few hundred words a day. Instead of downloading a writing prompt app or searching for one across different blogs for writers, I simply ask ChatGPT for a writing prompt and it has yet to disappoint. Maybe one of these days, I’ll just ask ChatGPT to write the book for me.
3. Now that it’s a new year, I was looking to start creating some healthy habits and routines that would actually be doable. I figured, why not ask ChatGPT to do that for me too? I asked it the following: “Create a daily healthy schedule for someone who works 9-5 and has a YouTube channel after work. I wake up at 8 am and sleep at midnight”. I gave ChatGPT some information about myself: when I wake up and sleep, what times I typically work, and what else I work on. It gave me a detailed timeline of a sample schedule complete with examples of movement and meals. I then asked it to revise the timeline to include additional time for exercise (“Create a daily healthy schedule for someone who works 9-5 and has a YouTube channel after work. I wake up at 8 am and sleep at midnight. Include 45 minutes of exercise”) and it did exactly that in an updated version. This is amazing! It even has a cute note in here telling me that this schedule allows for a healthy balance of work, exercise and self care! ChatGPT cares about me!
4. You can even ask ChatGPT to help plan itineraries for you. I started asking for places to visit in Japan during autumn but noticed the results were very broad. I then decided to make my response more specific to Kyoto and asked for a sample itinerary. It is amazing how detailed and well organized ChatGPT presented this itinerary to me in. I was recently helping a friend of mine map out the destinations she wanted to visit on her own trip to Japan and I realized I should’ve just used ChatGPT instead of bookmarking and saving places on Instagram and TikTok before compiling them together in a Google Doc.
5. ChatGPT can even tell you what’s customary in countries you’re traveling to! I asked it about tipping culture in Japan and it shared an incredibly detailed response with different scenarios and how best to show your appreciation for good service while visiting.
How to use chatgpt professionally (for content creation)
Now that we’ve gone through some of the ways I’ve used ChatGPT in my personal life, let’s talk about how I’ve used it professionally too. I decided to ask ChatGPT for some video title ideas for YouTube. I noticed that being more specific really increases your chances of getting a good response, so I asked for a good title about a video explaining how I use ChatGPT both personally and professionally (“What's a good YouTube video title about a video explaining how I use ChatGPT both personally and professionally”). The responses were actually pretty good. The title of this article is actually one that ChatGPT offered me.
You can also ask ChatGPT to create YouTube scripts for you too. I can’t even begin to explain how powerful this is for virtually any industry and while I don’t think anyone should be using these long-form responses and summaries word for word from ChatGPT, this is a great starting point that you can then use with your own ideas to add personal touches. In this example here, ChatGPT is even smart enough to include an intro and outro to your channel. You can’t get this through search engines nor even various blogs that tell you how to become a YouTuber. It’s capable of writing speeches, essays and so much more that enable content creation.
3. Speaking of content, ChatGPT can also give you ideas for content to create. In this particular scenario, I noticed that ChatGPT really had no choice but to give me a broad response. It’s still really interesting and helpful but this is just one example of how I don’t necessarily think it’s intelligent enough yet to replace an actual human’s creative mind. For instances like this, there’s a human connection that’s still lacking that won’t include super current events, products, or even that special human touch that makes a video unique.
4. As someone who works in the marketing and product space, I thought it was incredible that ChatGPT can even create an email series specific to what you’re telling it to write about. I asked it: “Generate a series of four emails introducing someone to ChatGPT and how they can use it in their life”. In this example, I asked ChatGPT to help create an email sequence of multiple emails introducing what ChatGPT is and how someone can use it. The response is tailored emails complete with subject lines, doing exactly that. It’s examples like these that I’m blown away at how intelligent this AI is and while I, as a marketer, would still tweak and add to these emails, again, they are a great starting point and really make me excited for what it can do in the future. That is, as long as it doesn’t take my job.
5. Finally, you even use ChatGPT to help plan and schedule for you. I can ask ChatGPT to create a schedule for a YouTube video I’m creating and include things like brainstorming, timeline, and deliverables. ChatGPT breaks this down for you by the week and gives you bullet points on what you should do each week and how best to plan. The organizer in me loves tools like this and it helps me put my thoughts and to-dos together in a much easier manner. It’s like your own AI personal assistant helping you do your job.
Final Thoughts
By no means is ChatGPT perfect. It definitely has its limitations, some of which I mentioned. Some answers are very broad and lack awareness for current events and situations. For those who may be using it to ask technical or programming related questions, I’ve heard ChatGPT may not necessarily be accurate all the time. And while we’re just beginning to see the many use cases we can use in our everyday lives for ChatGPT, I still think it will take some time before AI replaces humans or other large search engines. Nevertheless, this is the next frontier of technology and it is so exciting to see tools like ChatGPT come to life and grow smarter everyday.
